DAY 22: GOD’S PROTECTION: Safeguarded by His Sovereign Hand
When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.” When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under. Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.” Matthew 2:13–18
No sooner had the Magi departed than danger arose. Herod, blinded by pride and fear, sought to destroy the newborn King. But God was already at work, watching over His Son and those entrusted with Him. In the quiet of the night, an angel warned Joseph: “Get up… escape to Egypt.”
Joseph obeyed immediately. Once again, he acted in faith, trusting that God’s command would lead to safety. The journey into Egypt fulfilled prophecy and showed that even in peril, God’s plans move forward untouched. While Herod raged, Heaven reigned.
The tragedy in Bethlehem included the weeping of mothers and the loss of innocent life, which reminds us that evil tries to resist God’s purposes, but God’s providence will prevail. Jesus, the true Deliverer, brings salvation, conquering sin and death forever.
In our own seasons of fear or uncertainty, this passage assures us that God’s protection is both personal and purposeful. He sees what threatens us and leads us to safety, even when we don’t yet see His path clearly.
God’s guidance often comes quietly but clearly, as it did to Joseph. His timing and direction are always for our good and His glory.
Reflect:
When has God protected or redirected me in ways I only understood later?
How can I respond with the same faith and obedience Joseph showed?
Lord, thank You for being my Protector and Guide. Even when I cannot see the danger ahead, You are watching over me. Help me to listen for Your voice and to follow Your leading with trust and courage. Keep me close to Your heart, where I am forever safe. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
