DAY 14: JOSEPH’S OBEDIENCE AND FAITH: Trusting God When You Don’t Understand
This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. Matthew 1:18–25
Joseph’s story often unfolds quietly beside Mary’s, but his faith is no less extraordinary. Before any angelic choir filled the sky, God spoke to Joseph in the stillness of a dream. What he heard must have seemed impossible, that Mary’s child was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and that child would be the long-awaited Savior.
Joseph’s first reaction was compassionate and cautious. As a righteous man, he wanted to uphold God’s law, yet he also sought to protect Mary’s dignity. His actions show both integrity and mercy. But when God revealed His plan, Joseph’s faith deepened into obedience. Without hesitation, he took Mary as his wife and accepted the sacred task of raising the Son of God.
Through Joseph’s quiet strength, we see what faith looks like when tested by confusion and fear. He didn’t need to understand every detail to obey God’s direction. His trust in the Lord’s word turned potential scandal into divine purpose.
God still calls us to the same kind of trust, to walk forward even when the path is unclear, knowing that His plans are always good and His promises true.
Joseph’s obedience teaches that faith is often proven in the unseen. I don’t need to know how God will work, only that He will.
Reflect:
When have I needed to obey God without full understanding?
How can I live out quiet, steadfast faith like Joseph’s?
Lord, thank You for Joseph’s example of quiet courage and faith. When Your plans are greater than my understanding, help me to trust and obey You fully. Teach me to walk in righteousness and mercy, knowing that every step of obedience brings glory to You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
