DAY 12: THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF HIS COMING: When the Angel Spoke to Mary

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.” Luke 1:26–38

For centuries, God’s people had waited in silence,  longing for the fulfillment of His promises. Then, one ordinary day in the small town of Nazareth, heaven broke its silence. The angel Gabriel appeared to a young woman named Mary with a message that would change the course of history: the Messiah is coming and He will come through you.

Mary was a humble servant. God saw in her a heart of faith and obedience. Though she did not fully understand how this could be, she responded with simple surrender: “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.”

This moment captures the mystery and beauty of God’s plan. He chooses the willing over the mighty, the humble over the proud. His favor is not earned; it is given. And through Mary’s “yes,” the Word of God began to take on flesh.

When Gabriel declared, “The Lord is with you,” he revealed the heart of the gospel: God’s desire to dwell among His people. What began in Mary’s womb would soon become the hope of the world: Immanuel, God with us.

Mary’s faith invites me to respond the same way, with trust and surrender, even when I don’t understand God’s plan.

Reflect:

  • How do I respond when God’s plan surprises or challenges me?

  • Am I willing to say, “I am the Lord’s servant,” no matter what He asks?

Lord, thank You for choosing Mary to bring Your Son into the world and for her example of humble faith. Teach me to respond to Your calling with the same trust and obedience. Let my life be a place where Your presence can dwell and Your promises can be fulfilled. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
