DAY 21: THE MAGI WORSHIP THE KING: Gifts for the Savior
Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. Matthew 2:7–12
The Magi’s long journey ended not in a palace, but in a humble home. Yet when they entered and saw the child Jesus, they fell to their knees in worship. They had followed the light across distant lands, and now their faith met its fulfillment: God’s promised King lay before them.
Their gifts were deeply symbolic. Gold represented kingship, acknowledging Jesus as the true King of kings. Frankincense, used in worship, honored His divinity. Myrrh, a burial spice, foreshadowed His sacrifice. Each offering was an expression of reverence, recognizing that this child was no ordinary ruler but the Savior of the world.
The Magi’s worship teaches us that true adoration always involves both reverence and sacrifice. They gave not only valuable treasures but also their time, their journey, and their hearts. Their encounter with Jesus changed their direction, both literally and spiritually. They “returned to their country by another route,” a symbol of transformation after meeting Christ.
When we encounter the King, we cannot leave unchanged. Worship redirects us. It turns us from self toward surrender, from seeking to giving, and from fear to joy.
The Magi remind us that worship is more than a song or moment, it is a response of the heart that gives God our very best.
Reflect:
What treasures (time, talents, or devotion) can I lay before Jesus this season?
How has encountering Christ redirected the path of my life?
Lord, You are my King and my Savior. Like the Magi, I bow before You with joy and gratitude. Receive my worship and the offering of my life. May everything I have and am bring honor to You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
