Thursday: HOW JESUS CLEANSES MY HEART

John 2:1-11

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” 4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” 11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

God orchestrated Jesus’ first miracle to encompass his purpose and grace. He was to visit Cana in Galilee with his disciples to attend a wedding. As it was, the wedding occurred on the third day after their arrival. Jesus did His most exceptional work on the third day; it was on the third day after his burial that He arose from the tomb.

Indeed, the wedding may have even been a family member, as His mother was also present. Invariably, the wine was bound to run out. Instead of filling wineskins, He chose ceremonial washing jars, which were much larger.

Jesus proceeded to instruct the servants to fill the jars with water, to draw some out, and to present it to the master of the banquet, who was astounded by the quality of the wine.

THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS

God chooses to provide the ultimate wine, the blood of Jesus, to ceremonially wash my heart. He does this so that the bridegroom, Jesus Himself, can be united to His church, the bride.

Through His love for the people, He reveals His glory by working miracles that are beyond human understanding. We learn from His miracles that He is showing that He is the Messiah, the Holy One of God.

Father, thank You for revealing Your Son Jesus to me. I desire to be filled up and my heart cleansed with His blood. Help me to see the miracles He produces all around me every day. Amen.

May you be blessed,
