FRIDAY: THE PROPHECY OF THE ETERNAL KING

Lord, I desire for You to be the King of my heart and my life. Please guide me in bowing in submission to Your authority.

Jeremiah 23:5-6

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The Lord Our Righteous Savior.

Jeremiah lived during a time of turmoil, when the throne of David’s kingdom would be overthrown by the Babylonians, and the tribe of Judah taken to the land of Babylon. Even during so much change, God declared to Jeremiah that the days were coming when He would raise up another King to reign over the land. This King would be Divine—the only King who could be truly righteous.

While earthly kings tried to provide physical safety, this new King would save souls. Through Him alone, I do not need to fear, for with Him reigning I can live in the safety of knowing my Savior.

From the beginning, God created humans, so He could be their King. He also reigned over the nation of Israel before they demanded an earthly King. Jeremiah foretold that Jesus would be a Righteous Savior: Only through my Righteous Savior giving His life for my sins can I be saved and belong to His Kingdom. Jesus reigns as the Righteous King over His Kingdom.

THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS: It feels like I continually experience change on this earth, and sometimes I feel threatened by these changes. I am reassured by this prophecy that I don’t need to worry: As earthly rulers rise and fall, Jesus still forever reigns wisely on His throne. I can also be assured He will do what is just and right in the land.

As for me, God knows the days that are coming in my life; He has determined my future and has sent me what I need for today. I want to learn to cling to His Righteousness and praise Him for His Justice. When I look to these attributes of Jesus, I rejoice with praise and thanksgiving. The praise I give to the Lord brings peace to my heart; He guides and directs me through every situation.

Lord, please help me to focus on You and Your Eternal Kingdom. I desire to become so dependent on and trusting in Your Word that I continually rest in the hope provided by my King and Righteous Savior, Jesus Christ.

May you be blessed,
