Luke 2:8-14
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God, and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
The shepherds were at work doing their jobs, as they faithfully did in all kinds of weather, working 24/7 for little pay. Suddenly, their lives were illuminated by an angel of the Lord, with the glory of the Lord shining around them. I would be terrified also!
The angel spoke words of comfort, letting them know there was no reason to be afraid. The angel brought good news that would cause great joy for all people. The shepherds waited to hear the good news. After all, they had never seen an angel before and probably did not consider themselves worthy of the angel’s presence.
THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS
The good news that was shared by the angel to the shepherds is good news for me also: the Messiah has been born! Many thought the Messiah would come, but some thought He would come as a revolutionary to deliver them, not as a baby. The angel described the place where the baby was born and told the shepherds they would find Him there. This was a direct invitation for them to go find Him. Jesus later said, “The one who seeks finds.” (Luke 11:9)
If the presence of one angel wasn’t enough, God lit up the skies to announce the birth of His Son Jesus. A multitude of angels appeared, glorifying God, and proclaiming peace to men.
Lord, thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to earth. I want to glorify You with the angels for Jesus! Amen.
May you be blessed,
