HOW CAN THIS BE?

Lord, I know You are at work all around me.  When Your work doesn’t make sense to the rest of the world, I am in awe that You make it clear that it is work which only You can do. Amen.

Luke 1: 26-38

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

It’s not every day that an angel shows up to announce the birth of God’s Son.  This was a special day.  He selected a young woman who was highly favored.  She honored God, and the Lord was with her.

Mary was afraid.  The angel told her strange things which she couldn’t fathom.  The angel told her not to be afraid.  She would give birth to a son named Jesus.  He will be called the Son of the Most High.  His kingdom will never end.

THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS

Mary had questions.  I don’t blame her; it all sounds pretty incredible to me too.  The angel answered her questions so that she could understand the Trinity of God:  The Holy Spirit will come upon you; the power of the Most High (God the Father) will overshadow you; the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God (Jesus).

If I believe in Jesus, I also know that no word from God will ever fail.  God is the Most High who used His power to bring Heaven to earth for me.  Because of His Son, who died for me and rose again, the same Holy Spirit that came upon Mary has come into my heart.

On that day, Mary’s life changed forever.  On the day the Holy Spirit came into my life, my life changed forever too.

Dear God, I believe that Jesus is Your Son.  I believe He came to die for my sins.  May your Word to me be fulfilled today in my life.  Amen.
