ANNA'S THANKSGIVING

DAY 19: ANNA’S THANKSGIVING: Faithful Praise Rewarded

There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him. Luke 2:36–40

Anna’s story is short, but her devotion speaks volumes. A widow for most of her life, she had made the temple her home: her place of worship, prayer, and fasting. Her faith didn’t waver through years of waiting; instead, it deepened. Every day she watched for God’s promised Redeemer, trusting that He would come.

And then, one day, He did. As Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple, Anna approached, her heart instantly recognizing the fulfillment of God’s promise. Her response was immediate and overflowing: she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to redemption.

Anna’s life reminds us that faithfulness in the hidden and quiet years is never wasted. Her constant worship prepared her heart to recognize the Messiah when He appeared. The Lord rewarded her perseverance with the joy of seeing His salvation face-to-face.

Like Anna, we are called to live with expectant hearts: steadfast in prayer, unshaken in hope, and quick to give thanks when God’s faithfulness is revealed. Her joy flowed naturally into proclamation; those who know the Redeemer cannot keep silent.

Anna shows us that waiting on God is never idle: it’s worship. Even when the years feel long, God sees every prayer and honors every act of faithfulness.

Reflect:

  • How can I cultivate a heart of constant worship while I wait on God’s promises?

  • Who might need to hear me share the joy of what God has done?

Lord, thank You for Anna’s faith and perseverance. Teach me to worship You in every season, whether I’m waiting, watching, or rejoicing. Fill my heart with thanksgiving and help me to share the good news of Your redemption with those who long to know You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
