BE REFRESHED IN THE LORD

“Yes, brother, let me have joy from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ.”Philemon 1:20

A simple letter from Paul to Philemon becomes a powerful reminder of what refreshment in the Lord truly looks like.

Paul writes to Philemon concerning Onesimus, a runaway slave who had encountered Christ and become dear to Paul, like a son in the faith. Once considered unprofitable, Onesimus had now become useful and transformed. Paul appeals to Philemon not merely to receive Onesimus back, but to receive him with grace, forgiveness, and love.

Paul tells Philemon that such obedience would refresh his heart in the Lord. That phrase stays with me.

Many years ago, the Lord taught me something unexpected about refreshment. He showed me that a refreshed heart often begins with surrender. I experienced forgiveness in a way I could never have produced on my own. A word from the Lord reached my heart, and instantly what I had held onto was released.

Since then, the Lord has continued teaching me that refreshment is not something I manufacture; it is something I receive in obedience.

THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS

When I seek the Lord in prayer, not asking for what I want, but asking for His desires to be accomplished, my heart is refreshed in Him.

When I open His Word and meditate on Scripture, my heart is refreshed again.

When I rejoice and praise His Name, my spirit becomes lighter.

When I confess honestly to Him the true condition of my heart, I receive His grace. Instead of running from Him in anxiety, frustration, disappointment, or anger, I can run toward Him and experience His Living Water flowing through me.

I also find refreshment in serving Him by serving others. There is something holy about pouring out what He has first poured into me. Somehow, in giving, I receive.

Today I am reminded that refreshment itself is a gift from the Lord. He refreshes hearts. He restores souls. He renews strength. Every blessing begins with seeking Him.

Lord, thank You for the many blessings You have given to me. Thank You for teaching me to seek You and for refreshing my heart and soul when I do. Continue teaching me obedience that draws me closer to You. May my life bring refreshment to others as You have refreshed me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
