Deuteronomy 32:1-6
“Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. Let my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill as the dew, As raindrops on the tender herb, and as showers on the grass. For I proclaim the name of the Lord: ascribe greatness to our God. He is the Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; righteous and upright is He.
“They have corrupted themselves; they are not His children, Because of their blemish: a perverse and crooked generation. Do you thus deal with the Lord, O foolish and unwise people? Is He not your Father, who bought you? Has He not made you and established you?
Moses spoke these words at the end of his life. He asked the heavens and earth to listen. He said his teaching was like the rain and the dew; as the rain and dew water the herbs and the grass, so his words were to water the Israelites to whom he spoke.
Moses praised the work and ways of God; His work is perfect, and all His ways are justice. He described God as truth, without injustice. He described the Israelites as corrupt, perverse, and crooked.
Moses asked three pertinent questions: Is this how you deal with the LORD? Isn’t it God your Father, who bought you? Didn’t God make you and establish you?
THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS
While the three questions seem to be rhetorical, each begs an answer. If I am blemished with sin, I can never “deal with,” or repay, the LORD. The LORD paid the price for my sin and “bought” me. He is also my Creator and established me.
If Moses knew the answers, why ask the questions? Moses also sinned and displeased the Lord, but he wanted the Israelites to understand who they were “dealing” with.
It is through our foolishness and lack of wisdom that we even question the Lord. But through our questions, He answers—He is our Rock, our Truth, and our Righteous One who is perfect, just, and upright.
Lord, You are the Only One who is Righteous; thank You for accepting me, for loving me, and for redeeming me. Amen.
May you be blessed,
