DAY 13: MARY’S SONG OF PRAISE: My Soul Magnifies the Lord
And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me: holy is His name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.” Luke 1:46–55
When Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth, the reality of God’s promise overflowed from her heart in song. Known as the Magnificat, this hymn of praise reveals Mary’s deep understanding of God’s character and His faithfulness across generations.
Her song is more than personal gratitude: it’s worship and prophecy. Mary recognizes that the child growing within her is the fulfillment of every promise made to Abraham and David. Her humble heart magnifies the greatness of God, who exalts the lowly and fills the hungry with good things.
In a world that values power and pride, Mary celebrates the God who reverses human expectations. He scatters the proud, brings down rulers, and lifts up the humble. Her words remind us that God sees the overlooked, works through the ordinary, and fulfills His promises with mercy and strength.
Mary’s joy is contagious because it is rooted not in her circumstances but in the unchanging nature of God. Her response to His grace, “My soul glorifies the Lord,” invites us to do the same.
Advent calls us to join Mary’s song: to magnify the Lord with grateful hearts. When we remember His mercy and faithfulness, we too can rejoice.
Reflect:
What can I praise God for today, even before I see the outcome?
How can I magnify the Lord in my words and actions this season?
Lord, my soul glorifies You, and my spirit rejoices in Your salvation. Thank You for remembering Your promises and for lifting up the humble. Teach me to live with the same faith and praise that filled Mary’s heart. Let my life be a song that magnifies You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
