GOD'S TESTIMONY ABOUT JESUS

1 John 5:6-12

This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.  For there are three that testify:  the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree.  If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son.  Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son.  And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

There is a testimony that is greater than any testimony that I can give—it is God’s testimony of His Son, Jesus Christ.  It is true that the Holy Spirit testifies regarding Jesus; everything that comes through the Spirit points to Jesus Christ.

What else points to Jesus Christ?  The cross, on which He shed His blood.  Jesus’ blood testifies about Him, and the cross leads us to Jesus.  The sacrament of Communion points to Jesus and the sacrifice He made for me.

There is something else that points to Jesus: the water of baptism.  When I was baptized, the symbolism was amazing: I died with Jesus, and I rose with Him through the waters of baptism.  The very act of baptism pointed to Jesus.  When Jesus was baptized, a Divine union filled the air as the Trinity was present: God spoke from the heavens, and the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove and landed on Jesus.

THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS

John states that “Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself...”--God’s testimony lives in me through the Holy Spirit, who God has given me for believing in His Son.  The testimony has indeed created new life in me.

And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.  Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

And the question burns inside me for you:  Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He came to die for your sins, and God raised Him from the dead so that you may live with Him forever?

Lord, I do believe!  Thank You for the privilege of living this life for You,

and allowing me to testify to Jesus every day.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
