DAY 16: THE ANGELS’ ANNOUNCEMENT: Good News of Great Joy
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:8–15
It was an ordinary night for the shepherds: dark, quiet, and routine. Yet in a moment, heaven broke through the silence. The glory of the Lord surrounded them, and an angel declared the greatest message ever spoken: “A Savior has been born to you.”
God could have revealed the birth of His Son to kings or priests, but instead He chose humble shepherds, who lived humble lives and kept watch through the night. His message was not just for them, but for all people. The long-awaited Messiah had come, and His arrival would bring joy that no darkness could overcome.
The angel’s announcement turned fear into faith and night into light. The Savior’s birth meant that God’s peace was no longer distant. He was here, a child lying in a manger. “Glory to God in the highest,” the angels sang, declaring that heaven and earth had met through Jesus.
This moment reminds us that the gospel is personal: “A Savior has been born to you.” The good news is not just for the world; it’s for each of us individually. When we receive that truth, joy fills our hearts and worship flows freely.
Like the shepherds, we are called to listen, believe, and go in faith. God still meets us in ordinary moments and invites us to witness His glory.
Reflect:
Do I hear the angel’s message as personal, a Savior born for me?
How can I share this “good news of great joy” with someone today?
Lord, thank You for sending the Savior of the world and for making the good news personal. Let my heart be filled with the same joy the shepherds felt that night. May Your peace reign in me, and may Your glory shine through my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
