DAY 20: THE MAGI SEEK THE KING: Guided by the Light

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born.“In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” Matthew 2:1–6

The Magi’s journey began with a sign: a brilliant star rising in the night sky. These men were magi from the East, most likely descendants from the wise men of Daniel’s time, who would be familiar with ancient Hebrew prophecies about a coming King. When they saw the heavenly light, they understood its significance: a King had been born in Israel.

Their response was remarkable. They left behind comfort and familiarity to seek the One worthy of their worship. Theirs was a journey of faith, guided by a divine light that led them closer to the Savior.

When they arrived in Jerusalem, they asked “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?”  This disturbed the earthly king, Herod, and revealed how easily people can miss God’s work even when it’s unfolding nearby. The religious leaders knew the prophecy of Bethlehem, but they did not go to see. The Magi, however, continued their search with eager hearts.

Their example reminds us that true wisdom is not in knowing about God, but in seeking Him. The star led them, but it was worship that compelled them forward. God still honors those who diligently seek Him.  He meets them on the journey and reveals His glory along the way.

The Magi show that those who seek Christ with sincere hearts will always find Him. God still uses light to guide us closer to Himself.

Reflect:

  • What “star” has God placed in my life to draw me nearer to Him?

  • Am I willing to leave my comfort to pursue Christ more deeply?

Lord, thank You for drawing me by the light of Your truth. Help me to seek You with the same devotion the Magi showed. Lead me daily by Your Spirit and let my search always end in worship before You, my true King. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
