DAY 6: THE PROPHECY OF THE SHEPHERD: The One Who Guides and Gives His Life

“I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd. I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them. I the Lord have spoken.”  Ezekiel 34:23–24

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep…I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.” John 10:11, 14

When God spoke through the prophet Ezekiel, Israel was scattered like sheep without a shepherd. Their leaders had failed them, and the people wandered without guidance or protection. But God promised a day when He would raise up one Shepherd—a descendant of David—who would lovingly tend His flock.

That Shepherd is Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd who came to seek and save the lost. Unlike human rulers, Jesus does not lead from a distance. He knows His sheep by name, walks beside them, and even lays down His life for their sake. His leadership is marked not by power or control, but by sacrificial love and intimate care.

This prophecy reminds us that God’s plan has always been personal. He doesn’t just rule His kingdom—He shepherds it. He gathers those who have strayed, binds up the broken, and restores those who have been wounded. In a world that often feels uncertain and divided, His voice still calls to His sheep: “Follow Me.”

When I recognize Jesus as my Shepherd, I no longer have to wander aimlessly. He leads me beside still waters, provides for my needs, and protects me through life’s darkest valleys. His voice brings peace, His presence brings comfort, and His sacrifice secures my salvation.

We all follow something, including ambition, approval, comfort, but only one Shepherd leads to eternal life. Listening to His voice means trusting His guidance, even when I can’t see the path ahead.

Reflect:

  • Am I listening for the Shepherd’s voice, or following my own way?

  • How can I reflect the Shepherd’s love by caring for others in His name?

Lord Jesus, my Good Shepherd, thank You for finding me when I was lost and for leading me with grace and gentleness. Help me to follow Your voice with trust and obedience. May Your care and compassion overflow through me, so that others may see Your love and come to know You as their Shepherd and Savior. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
