DAY 2: THE PROPHECY OF THE STAR: Guided by Heaven’s Light

“I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel.” Numbers 24:17

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” Matthew 2:1–2

Long before Christ’s birth, God revealed through Moses that a star would rise from Jacob—a sign of divine kingship and light breaking through darkness. Centuries later, that prophecy was fulfilled when a brilliant star appeared in the heavens, announcing the arrival of the promised King.

To most, it was only a beautiful light in the night sky. But to the Magi—wise men from the east who studied the heavens—it was “His star,” the one foretold to mark the Messiah’s birth. God, in His sovereignty, used these distant travelers—king-makers from Persia—to recognize and proclaim the kingship of His Son.

The star was no ordinary celestial body. It was a divine beacon guiding seekers to Jesus. Just as the Magi followed the light to Bethlehem, we too are called to follow the light of Christ in a dark and uncertain world. The “scepter” foretold by Moses speaks of authority: Christ’s righteous rule and His power to correct and redeem what is broken. Through Him, God intervened in history so that humanity could be restored to Him.

Like Moses, we sometimes “see Him, but not now.” God’s promises can feel distant, yet His light is already shining. The Magi journeyed by faith, following what they could not fully understand, until they came face-to-face with the Savior. In the same way, we must walk by the light God gives, one step at a time.

Reflect:

  • Am I following the light of Christ, or seeking my own path?

  • How can I reflect His light to others in a dark world?

Lord, thank You for sending the Light of the world to guide me. Illuminate my heart so that my life reflects Your glory. As the star led the Magi to Jesus, lead me daily to walk in Your light and to show others that You are the King of all. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Wayne, this is so beautiful, and I wonder if I have your permission to use it, in its entirety, as my Christmas greeting to friends and family this year. Of course, I will give you credit.
