DAY 17: THE SHEPHERDS’ JOY: A Message Proclaimed

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. Luke 2:16–20

The shepherds didn’t hesitate. The moment the angels’ song faded into the night, they hurried to Bethlehem. They didn’t question, calculate, or delay; they went. Faith moved them to hurry to see the One whom they had longed to see.

What they found was exactly as the angel had said: a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. The promise was real; the Savior had come. Their response was as natural as breathing; they began to tell everyone. These humble shepherds became evangelists, proclaiming the good news that God had arrived in the flesh.

The shepherds’ story shows us that joy is not meant to be contained. Real joy overflows from my heart to my lips and out into the world. The good news that brought the shepherds to the manger sent them back into the fields as transformed witnesses. Their lives were forever changed, and their ordinary work now carried eternal meaning.

Mary was also changed that night. While others spread the message, she quietly pondered the mystery in her heart. Both the shepherds’ response of proclamation and Mary’s response of contemplation are forms of worship. One tells of what God has done; the other treasures it deeply within. Together, they complete the picture of what it means to encounter Christ.

Like the shepherds, we are called not only to receive the good news but to share it. Christmas joy is not meant to fade with the season; it is meant to be proclaimed through our words, actions, and lives.

Reflect:

  • How has meeting Jesus changed the way I live and speak?

  • Who in my life needs to hear the “good news of great joy”?

Lord Jesus, thank You for the joy that came to earth the night You were born. Let that same joy fill my heart and overflow into my words and actions. Help me to tell others of Your love, so that they too may glorify and praise You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
