THINGS THE LORD HATES: A Person Who Stirs Up Conflict (Tuesday)

Proverbs 6:16-19 (Day 7 of 7)

There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers overall wrongs. Proverbs 10:12

A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends. Proverbs 16:28

An angry person stirs up conflict, and a hot-tempered person commits many sins. Proverbs 29:22

A person who stirs up conflict does so because of a prideful and greedy heart. It usually starts with gossip—telling someone else’s story behind their back and without their permission.

The root of this conflict comes from a desire to cast attention on myself and a negative light on someone else. Instead of talking to the Lord about them, the desire becomes to tell other people.

The person who stirs up conflict may be conflicted themselves, but there is often an underlying, self-centered motive.

THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS

I examine my life today and ask the Lord to forgive me for all the times I have stirred up conflict, whether intentionally or unintentionally. I can create conflict simply by focusing on myself rather than on the Lord, and lead others to do the same.

Instead of having a conflicted, self-centered life, the Lord desires my entire focus to be on Him. Today I repent and ask the Lord to help me to be a peacemaker rather than one who stirs up conflict.

Lord, please fill me full of peace, and make me a peacemaker among brothers and sisters in the Lord. Amen.
