THURSDAY: Seek the Lord; He Is Good

Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him! Psalm 34:8
Have you ever served a child food they’ve never had before? Most children look at new foods with great suspicion. In fact, many adults do as well. My daughter loves rice, cheese, and chicken. But if I put them all together in a new form, it’s a challenge to get her to taste it before she decides she doesn’t want it. And I think, “What’s not to like about this meal? You like everything in it.” Every parent has said these words over and over again, “Just a little taste; that’s all I’m asking.”
Have you ever enjoyed a food and offered a taste to a friend or family member? How disappointing it is when they decline. We want to share the goodness and enjoy it together.
I see all of that in this verse. It’s an invitation to share something wonderful together. The psalmist knows there’s really no reason not to give the Lord a chance. He is love, truth, light, and life. He is patient, forgiving, just, and merciful. He is wise, holy, righteous, faithful, and so much more. What’s not to like?
Maybe all that seems too good to be true. Maybe there’s just too much about religion you don’t like. The psalmist isn’t inviting you to try religion. He’s urging you to seek the Lord, if only a little. He knows that if you just get a taste of Him, you’ll find that the Lord is good. He knows that great joy awaits you there.
May you know the goodness of God and be filled with joy.
May you be blessed,
Cindy Larscheid
