WALKING WITH JESUS DURING COMMUNION

This week, I am exploring what God says about Walking with Him.  As I enter prayer now, I reflect on God’s instruction from Colossians 2:6: Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.

Lord, teach me today about walking with You.

I desire to learn how to clear distractions away

so I can hear You clearly as You lead me.

Let me consider the Word of God from Matthew 26:19-30:

So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover. When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?” Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.” Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?” Jesus answered, “You have said so.” While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the[a] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus started his ministry with the sacrament of baptism and ended it with the sacrament of communion.  Communion invites me to commune with God and remember Christ’s sacrifice for me on the cross.  The appointed time for Jesus meant the time when Jesus was to return to His Father; He determined to mark the occasion with a celebration with His disciples.

Communion is also a time for truth.  Jesus declared, “One of you will betray me.”  While communion is a remembrance of Christ’s offering himself for me, I can also remember His desire for me to be holy.  Jesus commanded the truth to be told before He gave instructions for communion to be taken.

Lord, today I thank You for suffering for me.

Taking communion helps me remember that the Holy One died for me.  Jesus gave thanks for the bread and the cup.  He knew His body was about to be broken and His blood about to be poured, and He thanked God for this.  Do I remember to thank God for my suffering?

Lord, please allow me to commune with You today as I remember You offering Yourself on the cross for my sins.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
