THINGS THE LORD HATES: A Lying Tongue (Tuesday)

Proverbs 6:16-19 (Day 2 of 7)

There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment. Proverbs 12:19

A fortune made by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare. Proverbs 21:6

A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin. Proverbs 26:28

It doesn’t take long to realize the effects of a lying tongue. At the root of the lying tongue lies hate and deception: a person with a lying tongue looks to deceive another person to get what he wants.

A lying tongue is like a flattering mouth…saying something to someone to butter them up to get what I want.

A lying tongue also lasts only a moment; its reward is fleeting, and it is used to work ruin. Whatever integrity I had before I lied is lost the moment the lie is uttered. In effect, it works ruin in the person who I have lied to, but the ruin is even worse inside my own life.

THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS

I examine my life today and ask the Lord to forgive me for the lies I have told. Even the white lies, half-truths, and things I have said just to impress others darken my heart with sin which the Lord hates.

Instead of having a lying tongue, the Lord desires all my speech to be washed in His truth. Today I repent and ask Him to wash my heart with His righteousness, allowing my mouth to only utter words of truth.

Lord, help me to speak to everyone with words of truth today! Amen.
